“I grew up in the Philippines around close family. My parents moved our family to Christchurch, New Zealand in the hopes of giving me and my sister better opportunities and futures. I chose to go to the University of Canterbury (UC) as it enabled me to be close to family and study both Computer Science and Japanese while being around a community I was familiar with considering I was starting to get involved in community engagement activities around my area. This ended up becoming the right decision as soon found my feet in community development UC was the perfect place to jump-start exploring a career in this space. I was then able to connect with the EducationUSA team here in New Zealand to help me explore the possibility of postgraduate study in the US.”
“I ended up getting accepted into the Masters of Education in Community Development and Action at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. What I would like to achieve through this study is to learn how to create positive, community-level change for ethnic youth back in New Zealand. I want to be able how to increase youth participation in decision-making around programs and policies that affect young people in their everyday lives, especially ensuring that cultural safety and recognition are also celebrated for people of ethnic backgrounds.”
