Lower Hutt and Tempe Sister Cities 40th Anniversary
U.S. Ambassador Udall was honored to give back to the land and plant a kōwhai tree at his residence in Lower Hutt to mark the 40th anniversary of the Sister Cities partnership between Hutt Sister City & Tempe Sister Cities .
The Sister Cities International program was created by President Eisenhower so people of different cultures could celebrate & appreciate their differences & build partnerships.
In 1981 Hutt resident Marie-Louise Blockley traveled to Tempe on a cultural exchange & since then many participants have travelled to both cities & been part of the program.
More photos from the tree planting ceremony can be found on FlickR.
