What is SEVIS?
The Program is designed to help the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department better monitor student and exchange visitors. The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) maintains information on nonimmigrant students (F and M visa), exchange visitors (J visa), and their dependents (F-2, M-2, and J-2). SEVIS enables schools and program sponsors to transmit mandatory information and event notifications to the Department of Homeland Security and State Department during the visitor’s stay in the United States.
Who pays the fee?
Those who wish to enter the United States either as a student or as an exchange visitor must complete Form I-20 or DS-2019, depending on the nature of the visit, and pay the fee.
When do prospective students or exchange visitors pay the SEVIS fee?
Applicants who require a visa to enter the United States must pay the SEVIS fee on-line before going to the Consulate for their visa interviews.
